26.2 Miles

I’ve done it. I signed up for the Rock ‘N Roll Marathon in Savannah, GA on November 7th of this year. I’m training. I’m getting ready. It’s 26.2 miles. I know I can do it. Especially if I have a reason to do it. I can do these 26.2 miles… I know I can. I’m nervous, but I can do these 26.2 miles, I promise.

They say to give you the strength to go on when running a marathon, you should dedicate each mile to someone. So here goes…

26.2 Miles

Mile number 1 goes to my sister who says “WHY?”, I say “Why not?”

Mile number 2 goes to my step-dad, who put up with me through some of the worst periods of my life (attitude wise).

Mile number 3 goes to my sister who is coming down to run the 5k the day after my marathon. If she can run the 5k for me, I can run this for her.

Mile number 4 is for my brother, who goads me into going the extra mile, one way or another.

Mile number 5 is for Payton, my niece.

Mile number 6 is for the sweet little girl down the road who thinks I am awesome because I run.

Mile number 7 is for my 7 year old, because I want him to be proud of me.

Mile number 8 is for everyone who says I can’t… I’m going to prove that I CAN!

Mile number 9 is for my nine year old, who thinks that I can do anything.

Mile number 10 is for a little girl I know who is about to be 10, and has never been able to run. Mile 10 is for everyone with cerebral palsy.

Mile number 11 is for every animal I’ve volunteered with at the humane society that never got a home.

Mile number 12 is for Tommy Hill, the preacher who made such a difference in my life.

Mile number 13 is for the ladies I know running the half, so happy for them!

Mile number 14 is for my best friend Katie, who I was 14 when I met.

Mile number 15 is for my mom, who only had 15 years with my daddy.

Mile number 16 is for my nephews, Walter, Samuel, and Nicholas…

Mile number 17 is for my younger self, who used to run at 17, but stopped after some stupid mistakes.

Mile number 18 is for my friend Irena… Hoping that maybe one day she’ll run with me too.

Mile number 19 is for my nephew Tony, the first baby I ever held!

Mile number 20 is for my friend Tracy, who comes out with me every evening, even if it’s just for a walk.

Mile number 21 is Mr. Al Pierce, my boss when I was 21, a really great man.

Mile number 22 is for my niece Alyssa, because if I can do this, so can she!

Mile number 23 is for my husband… Who I was 23 when I started dating.

Mile number 24 is for my friend Richard, who passed away way too early in his life.

Mile number 25 is for everyone who says “Why?” Because I can, and others can’t, that’s why.

Mile number 26 is for my daddy, who told me before that I could do anything I want to do

Mile 26.2 is for me!!!

Now that I’ve told you who my 26.2 miles are for, tell me who yours are for! 26.2 miles can seem a bit daunting, but I’ve been told if we break it down like this, it will make it a bit easier.

The Perfect Running App

Hunting for the perfect running app?

Since the beginning of my fitness journey (really since April 1, 2015) I have been on the hunt for the the perfect running app. There are so many out there that it’s hard to decide which one to go with… I’ve been researching, both online and through trial and error on my own, and here’s what I’ve found so far:

Runkeeper

Runkeeper lets you sign in with your Google or Facebook account, which is always great, or allows you to set up an account on your own. You get proper tracking of your workout, the ability to choose from a number of training plans (lose weight, train for a race, just get started, etc.) and has various levels for all sorts of exercises. You get audible notifications (mine are set to give me my distance and average pace every 5 minutes , which is the default and absolutely AWESOME), and you can add friends for accountability and fun. The app is nicely designed, easy to use and has pro upgrades (through an in-app purchase) that opens up more sharing features. Will connect with a FitBit and ANT+ heart-rate monitors. Runkeeper tracks and lets you know your fastest runs, when you hit a new PR. All being said, Runkeeper is one of my new favorites.

Nike

Nike’s app is compatible with iOS and Android. You don’t even need a Fuel Band — the app will track things for you. You also get audible feedback and cheering, music support, and more…

Zombies, Run

Running sucks. (At least if you’re normal, it should suck.) This app makes it fun. Immersive and alternate reality games are nothing new, but Zombies, Run brings it into the fitness space. You’re running. Zombies are chasing. There are plenty of stories to keep you entertained, so it keeps things fun. Want interval training? It can do that, too. If you’re more of a walker than a runner, the app can handle that, too. (Just make sure you walk faster than zombies shuffle.)

MapMyFitness

The good people who built this app actually built several different ones… MapMyRun, MapMyWalk, MapMyRide, etc. I choose to use plain old MapMyFitness. This app breaks down every aspect of your fitness regimen and keeps you on track, literally, using your smartphone’s GPS. This all-in-one fitness tracker will collect, log and record your workout, giving you the freedom to concentrate on getting through that last mile. You can use this app to see your “vitals,” such as calories burned, distance completed, speed, duration and pace. This fitness tracker not only logs the data, but it also analyzes it for you, allowing you to pattern your workout based on your own statistics. MapMyFitness has a built-in BMI calculator, which is AWESOME if you’re like me and you have a million different apps that track all of this information, it makes it a one stop shop. Did I mention that it also gives you the option to track the miles you wear each shoes? Yes, this app is A-Ma-Zing! You will love it as much as I do, I promise. AND, it’s free, unless you opt in for extra coaching… Which you have the option for a monthly or annual subscription.

When I Dream, I Dream Big…

Yes, that’s right… When I dream, I dream big. You see, I started back running a few months ago. I had forgotten how much fun it was. Well, it’s not always fun, but it gets there… It relieves stress, and most of the time it’s the only true time to myself that I get. It didn’t take too long for me to decide that I wanted to sign up for a 5k… That’s manageable, definitely doable. I run at least 5 miles a day anyhow, so 3.1 miles is easy… Even if I come in dead last, it’ll be fine because I know I can finish it. Well, that’s when I started to dream… And when I dream, I dream big.

I thought to myself, I need something challenging… So, maybe I’ll skip a 10k and go straight to signing up for a half marathon. That sounds like a good challenge. Well, I started talking about it, and I really wanted someone to run with me, so I shared it on Facebook. A friend said that she and her brother were participating in it. Cool, I won’t be going alone… Something to work and train for. What do you think happened next? A friend messaged me and said “Why not go for the FULL marathon?”

That’s crazy talk.

I can’t run a full marathon.

Who wants to run 26.2 miles???

Wait. If he can do it, why can’t I?

Why not?

I want to run 26.2 miles.

Maybe I can run a full marathon.

I have 5 months to train.

It only costs $20 more to sign up for the full thing…

And you see, I started to dream big… Now, I am training. And to keep myself accountable, I am telling EVERYONE I know. And that’s why I’m telling you.

I am dreaming big, but I am also going after my dream. I don’t really have a goal time, my goal is simply to finish. I want to go 26.2 miles without stopping.

So, I signed up for the Rock N Roll Marathon in Savannah… I’ve started training. Right now, it’s not that different from what I’ve been doing. I run, and I just run a little farther each time. I’m building up to it, and I’m confident that by the time November 7th gets here, I’ll be ready to run the full 26.2 miles, and you’ll all be able to say that you know that crazy lady bringing up the rear! 🙂

Gosh I hope I’m not bringing up the rear… But if I am, that’ll be okay, because I’ll still be one of those people who have completed a marathon. And how many people can say that?

Tattoos and Working Out

All of you know just how much I LOVE tattoos, so it’s probably no surprise to you that the countdown is on until I get my next one (June 6th can’t get here fast enough!) but I have to admit that this time I’m a little nervous, not because of the tattoo itself (I know what to expect with it) but because I want to make sure I can still work out and not disturb the healing process, so I’ve been researching new tattoos and working out (haven’t found a whole lot) so that I can be sure to get the right information…

When I first did a google search, I actually didn’t come up with a lot of information that I trusted, and what I did find wasn’t exactly credible information, so I had to dig further… I contacted people I know who work out all the time and have AWESOME ink, and I talked to my artist, Michael Heard of ArchAngel Tattoos in Columbus, Georgia (AKA the most awesome tattoo god known to man!) to get his suggestions. While everyone has different opinions on aftercare of tattoos, there are a few things that we all agreed on:

  1. Exercise should be fine 24-48 hours after getting a tattoo if there is no discomfort, but make sure you follow appropriate aftercare instructions so it properly heals.
  2. Clean your tattoo with antibacterial soap and pat it dry with a towel.
  3. You should use an unscented lotion for moisture.
  4. Do not take a bath, sit in a hot tub or swim for two weeks after getting a tattoo.
  5. Do not wear clothes that will rub the tattoo (this can remove your scab early, causing a nasty blurry mess).

The most important advice I can give you (other than make sure you have an amazing artist) is to talk to your artist if you have any questions. He will be able to give you the best advice on taking care of your new investment (after all, good ink is expensive!). Happy Holidays!

Wow, I can’t believe it’s November 30th already… This year has completely flown by! Happy holidays everyone, but more importantly, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

How many of you already have your tree up? I have gone against the flow of my family traditions, and I put mine up on this past Friday, right after Thanksgiving… As well as a few other decorations. I really don’t feel like I’m done yet though, so I’ve been on Pinterest looking at decor.

On top of decorating earlier than normal, I am also proud to say that I think I am actually done with all of my Christmas shopping, and my gifts are even wrapped and safely hidden away  from the kids… They’re just waiting to have ribbons and gift tags (which I also found this awesome printable on Pinterest for!). Time to get back in shape
A little inspiration for us all…

Now, on top of all the regular holiday stuff, I have decided to start attempting to get back into shape BEFORE the new year… Be on the lookout for some fitness posts again. I have done one very important thing though, I’ve thrown out the scales. I will not be judging by the scales at all, I will be looking at inches lost and how well my pants fit. I have already printed the challenge and will be posting it in my office so that I can mark it off daily as I have finished.
